Om Neck

The sternocleidomastoid is a thick paired muscle running from behind your ear down to your sternum and collarbone. It flexes and rotates the neck and plays a key role in stabilizing your head position.

In calisthenics, neck strength is rarely a performance limiter, but it is an injury prevention priority. Every handstand, headstand, and inverted movement places the cervical spine in a loaded position that demands adequate neck musculature.

A weak neck creates excessive strain on the cervical vertebrae during inverted work. Athletes who train headstands without sufficient neck preparation risk repetitive stress injuries that develop slowly and are slow to recover.

Hur du tränar Neck

Neck bridges and wall neck presses are the most direct neck strengthening movements. Start with light isometric resistance against a wall in all four directions before progressing to full neck bridges.

For headstands, develop sufficient neck endurance to hold the position without discomfort for at least 30 seconds before progressing to free-standing holds. The neck should be able to manage the load before the hands come off the floor.

Avoid aggressive loaded neck movements without a proper progression. The cervical spine is vulnerable to sudden load changes. Build neck strength gradually over weeks and months, not days.

Vanliga frågor om Neck

If you are training handstands, headstands, or any inverted movement, yes. The cervical spine must be able to support and stabilize head position under load. Neglecting this creates a structural vulnerability.

A headstand is safe when performed with adequate neck strength and proper weight distribution. Most of the load should be on the hands, with the head providing balance support. A beginner who puts full load on the neck is training incorrectly.

Isometric neck presses against your hand in all four directions, plus slow neck circles, are sufficient for general preparation. Full neck bridges add significant strength once the baseline is established.
